It was learned early this week that Gill Man, star of Creature from the Black Lagoon and its two sequels, died in his pool. While the coroner’s report is not expected for several weeks, initial reports indicate no foul play, which is ironic for someone who allegedly made a career of foul play.
The news evoked a variety of reactions from the close-knit monster community.
While he was best known as the aquatic menace in the “creature” films, he spent most of his life heading up Monster Motion Pictures. Known as just “Gill” in the industry, he was responsible for many a monster’s career.
Godzilla, speaking through a spokesperson, had this to say, “ He was a monster’s monster. When I was coming up in the business, I used to wreak havoc on seaside fishing villages - pure bush-league stuff. Gill suggested I up my game and stomp the crap out of Tokyo. The rest is history.
Mothra had nothing but praise for the late impresario, stating, “I’d still be a larva if it weren’t for Gill.”
Gill Man looks surprised as he receives a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.
