It was learned early this week that Gill Man, star of Creature from the Black Lagoon and its two sequels, died in his pool. While the coronerās report is not expected for several weeks, initial reports indicate no foul play, which is ironic for someone who allegedly made a career of foul play.Ā
The news evoked a variety of reactions from the close-knit monster community.Ā
While he was best known as the aquatic menace in the ācreatureā films, he spent most of his life heading up Monster Motion Pictures. Known as just āGillā in the industry, he was responsible for many a monsterās career.
Godzilla, speaking through a spokesperson, had this to say, ā He was a monsterās monster. When I was coming up in the business, I used to wreak havoc on seaside fishing villages - pure bush-league stuff. Gill suggested I up my game and stomp the crap out of Tokyo. The rest is history.
Mothra had nothing but praise for the late impresario, stating, āIād still be a larva if it werenāt for Gill.ā
